The Second Coentunnel

The Second Coentunnel is a tunnel under the North Sea Canal, built to increase capacity next to the First Coentunnel (1966), which has existed for much longer. The tunnel was opened in 2013 and is part of the A10, the ring road around Amsterdam

About the project

The Second Coentunnel was built in combination with a new motorway connection, the Westrandweg, between the Coentunnel and the Raasdorp interchange, as an extension of the A5. The tunnel is designed as three fixed lanes towards Zaanstad and two reversing lanes that will be available in the direction of travel in which it is busiest at that time.
The total tunnel length of the newly built Second Coentunnel is 1312 metres. The Second Coentunnel consists of two traffic tubes and a central tunnel channel. The Second Coentunnel consists of 51 tunnel segments per wall, the majority of which were already permanently connected in the construction dock. The tunnel was then delivered and sunk in four parts.
Construction of the tunnel elements started in the spring of 2009 in the building dock of Rijkswaterstaat in Barendrecht. At the end of May 2011, all four tunnel elements were in their final position. The Second Coentunnel was taken into use on 13 May 2013.
